Playwright's Playlist: Diana Oh

Playwrights’ Corner
Diana Oh

Wow, choosing 15 influential songs was harder than I thought it'd be. A lot of these songs are from the music video era--the height of MTV actually on the TV. I was a a kid and I remember discovering Mariah Carey on MTV and loved the way she used her voice and even moreso how she used her back-up singers. MTV was also how I discovered En Vogue and they were everything--each of them, badass unapologetic singers, but then the way they used their voices to make unbelievable harmonies. En Vogue is probably the reason I'm obsessed with vocal harmonies. LP's "Into the Wild" was actually a huge guiding north star in terms of how I wanted the band arrangements for {my lingerie play}... to sound. I love the hugeness of that song, but also the vulnerability of LP's voice and how she transformed a ukulele into a sound worthy of symphony. Discovering Kathleen Hanna was a finding Jesus moment. She mixed politics with her music, and I find her actually to be more of a performance artist than anything because she used her music shows to say something really unearthing about female bodies. Discovering Sister Rosetta Tharpe was another finding Jesus moment--you can get lost watching videos of her on YouTube--she was a renegade. A lot of the songs on this list here are on this list because I love the vocals, and the authenticity that bleeds through the recordings. I'm trying more and more each day to express my authentic self in my work and having awesome artists and music to guide your way there is super inspiring.
