"Telethon!" 2016: Evan Ruggiero

Equity in the Arts
Evan Ruggiero

"Telethon!" is a virtual, theatrical event taking place on The Lark's blog every Tuesday and Thursday this September, produced by The Apothetae and The Lark to raise awareness and support for The Apothetae and Lark Initiative and Playwriting Fellowship. Each week, The Apothetae and The Lark will publish new videos created by members of the community, inspired by The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, an event that has faced criticism not only for using Disabled people as a fundraising tool, but also for focusing the public's attention on medical cures to "normalize" people with disabilities. The Apothetae and The Lark see this as an opportunity for Disabled artists to begin to reclaim agency and ownership around their stories, images, and bodies.

Evan Ruggiero is one cool customer. An indomitable dancer, singer and performer,  I first met Evan when he auditioned for the role of The Emcee in The Apothetae’s, “The Penalty” by Clay Mcleod Chapman and Robert M. Johanson; which was presented in its most recent incarnation at The Library Lounge at the Public Theater in December of 2015.

Evan’s one-legged hoof’n was inspired in no small part by Clayton “Peg Leg” Bates. Since the age of nineteen Ruggiero has been performing for audiences across the country and the world. Most recently he was seen in this spot for the 2016 Paralympics.

His energy in performance is infectious. As we were filming our various takes, people were peering in the door to check out what was going on. Kris and I decided to invite everyone in, and our film session became an impromptu jam session.

Evan and his band, which consisted of Andy Greatorex (Upright Bass), Ray Carega (Drums), and Justin Garcia (Guitar) had never performed together, and on this day they were christened
“Evan and the S’Evan Legs.” We think the name will stick, and we hope you enjoy their performance!
