After further consideration, the Lark Play Development Center is upgrading the previously posted DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
to a DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR
position as part of a strategic growth plan.
The DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR will oversee Lark’s successful and growing development program raising $1.4 million annually and lead the team towards the strategic goal of increasing the annual revenues to $3 million in the next five years. As a theater laboratory and think tank, not a traditional producing theater, Lark’s budget is 98% contributed revenue so this position is crucial to meeting our strategic growth priorities. For the past several years, the Lark’s fundraising team has consisted of the Artistic Director, Managing Director, Development Manager, part-time Development Assistant and part-time intern, with occasional support from outside fundraising counsel and an event producer. In the new structure, the Development Director replaces the Development Manager and the Development Assistant becomes full-time. The Development Director will will work closely with executive staff to meet all growth goals including the expansion of the development team from a two to a four person staff over the course of three to five years. As part of the transition, the Development Director will initially assume the responsibilities of a development manager position and gradually take on full supervisory responsibilities for the development department. Successful candidates will have a strong desire to be part of this transition including a four to five year commitment to the organization.
Primary Focus: In order to ensure successful growth in the next five years, this position will lead our major donor cultivation and stewardship activities and oversee institutional fundraising.
Reports to: Managing Director
Manages: full-time Development Assistant, part-time intern and contracted events staff and grant writers initially; it is our aim to expand the Development Director’s team to include two full time Development Associates and a grant writer over the next three to five years.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the development department, ensuring the smooth operations of staff and systems
- Design and execute the annual fundraising plan
- Drive weekly fundraising team meetings and four annual strategic planning meetings
- Oversee tracking and monitoring of all individual donor cultivations and solicitations including coordinating all major donor correspondence
- Coordinate numerous annual and one-time grant proposals and reports to private and corporate foundations, U.S. and foreign governments
- Interface with individual artists and partner organizations in creating grants and reports
- Oversee Development Assistant’s activities
- Play a key role in the company’s communications and profile-raising strategies, including web presence
- Interact with Board members during annual appeals, manage board event committee, as needed, and, in the future, a board development committee
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
- 5-10 years professional experience in fundraising
- Superb writing skills and track record in writing proposals and donor requests
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment including the ability to “manage up” with a collaborative and respectful style
- Impeccable organizational skills and very detail oriented
- Team player who likes to work as part of a growing, integrated staff
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Experience with fundraising database desired; knowledge of database architecture a plus
- Interest in new play development process a plus
- Candidate should want to focus on development or a related area as career path

As an intern at the Lark you'll join our small staff (9 full-time employees) in helping to cultivate new plays and support emerging playwrights. We rely on interns to keep our organization running and all interns are given significant responsibility. Each intern is paired with a department head who acts as a mentor and makes sure the experience is meaningful and worthwhile for both parties. All interns are expected to undertake an individual project during their time at the Lark as well as complete administrative duties. Interns are encouraged to participate in as many Lark events as possible and to take advantage of the theatre's offerings.
- 16 - 30 hours per week, and should be able to commit to a regular schedule.

DEVELOPMENT: How does a not-for-profit organization raise the funds needed to operate its programs and support its artists? How are decisions made about funding priorities? This internship provides an opportunity to learn hands-on how to research foundations, corporations and individual donors, work on special projects, process contributions, work with a donor database, learn about communicating with donors, assist in preparing grant proposals and participate in individual donor cultivation. Intern will be part of Development Team including Development Manager and Development Assistant, and will also be invited to attend strategy meetings with the Managing Director and Artistic Director, as well as special events for donors. The ideal candidate is reliable, enthusiastic, organized, and carefully attentive to details. An interest in writing is desirable.
ONSITE ARTISTIC PROGRAMMING: This internship works as part of the artistic team, supporting the Artistic & Literary Coordinator and the Director of Onsite Programs. Responsibilities include assisting in the preparation and implementation of various artistic programs, and requires a stage management like approach to handling program logistics. Other responsibilities may include Responsibilities may include corresponding with playwrights; supervising the distribution of new scripts; and script evaluation. Semi-regular evening availability is required in addition to select daytime hours. This internship is a great way to observe multiple approaches to new play development, with exposure to a variety of artists at different career stages. In addition, the intern is invited to serve as a member of the Lit Wing and to participate as fully as possible in the evaluation process.
ARTS ADMINISTRATION:
This internship provides a great opportunity to explore multiple areas of theater administration. Working with the Executive Assistant, this intern will provide support for the Producing Director and Managing Director. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: script review, correspondence, research, fundraising support, assisting in data inflow, artistic program support, and general support for the Lark internship program. The Arts Administration Intern is invited to attend and support artistic cabinet meetings, development meetings and staff meetings.
DRAMATURGY: Working with the Associate Artistic Program Director, this intern will provide support for the Lark's Roundtable Program: three-hour work sessions during which a new script is read aloud and the writer receives feedback. Responsibilities include preparation note taking, and cleanup for Roundtables and assisting in data inflow and artistic feedback. Writing and communication skills a big plus! Intern is encouraged to attend the readings and may have the opportunity to read stage directions. Intern candidates should be available Wednesday and Thursday from 1:00pm-10:00pm as well as some additional time during the week. This is a fantastic opportunity for an aspiring theatre professional to get to know writers, directors and new work, particularly for a young playwright or dramaturg.
GENERAL MANAGEMENT: If you are motivated, organized and responsible; this is a great opportunity for those who are interested in a career in producing. Interns will be partnered with the General Manager. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: scheduling and organizing rehearsals, readings and performances; Equity correspondence; processing contracts; making travel arrangements for artists; assisting in data inflow; reading and critiquing submitted plays; office maintenance/organization; assisting on managing the office calendar and special projects as they arise.
LITERARY MANAGEMENT: Intern will be partnered with the Artistic & Literary Coordinator. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: corresponding with playwrights; supervising the distribution of new scripts; creating and maintaining Lit Wing files; preparing all materials for Lit Wing meetings; and acting as a liaison between the Artistic & Literary Coordinator, members and playwrights. In addition, the Literary Intern is invited to serve as a member of the Lit Wing and to participate as fully as possible in the evaluation process.
MARKETING/COMMUNICATIONS: Learn how a professional theatre company initiates the marketing strategies from the ground up; from reading a script to creating e-blasts, press releases, website, to researching and communicating with outreach organizations and potential audiences. Interns assist with the creation/maintenance of all marketing materials, newsletters, Facebook/Blog/Twitter pages, box office, audience surveys, etc. Learn marketing programs such as Publisher, PatronMail, Fireworks, Dreamweaver. An ideal internship for anyone interested in how to get audiences for their own productions.
OFFSITE ARTISTIC PROGRAMMING AND PARTNERSHIPS:
This internship works as part of the artistic team, supporting the Director of Offsite Programs and Partnerships. Responsibilities may include research, help with project management and organization, meeting scheduling, reading/play coverage, data inflow with artistic feedback of all programming, correspondence, and tracking of play advancement. This intern also helps facilitate the US/Mexico Playwrights Exchange. Artistic programming intern attends the Artistic Staff weekly meetings and is also invited to sit in on the Artistic Cabinet meetings as well as the monthly Lit Wing meetings.
