Created by Arthur Kopit, the Playwrights’ Workshop brings playwrights together to share and develop new work in a rigorous, yet highly flexible and professional environment. Playwrights cannot apply to this program, fellows are nominated for inclusion in the Workshop by the Lark’s esteemed pool of Playwright Advisors and artistic directors at regional theatres. A small number of Playwright Fellows, and a Writer in Residence, an established writer, are invited to participate in each round of the Workshop, which lasts six months. This program supports a community of self-guided professionals who desire creative connection, peer relationships and mentorship opportunities, at no cost to them.

At Workshop sessions playwrights share pages or scenes from works-in-progress which are read by professional actors. They then may, at their choice, invite their colleagues and Playwright Advisors to comment on the work.

Recent fellows from the Workshop have gone on to receive productions for the plays they developed in the Workshop. Some recent successes include: Rajiv Joseph's BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGDAD ZOO, which went to Broadway March 31 - July 3, 2011 and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize; Saviana Stanescu’s WAXING WEST was produced by La Mama and received the Innovative Theatre Award for Best New Play; Rachel Axler's SMUDGE was produced by Women's Project; and Katori Hall's THE MOUNTAINTOP which has been produced on London's West End and will appear on Broadway in fall 2011.
