Playwrights' Workshop

Led by Arthur Kopit, the Playwrights’ Workshop brings playwrights together to share and develop new work in a rigorous, yet highly flexible and professional environment. Playwrights cannot apply to this program, they are nominated for inclusion in the Workshop by the Lark’s esteemed pool of Playwright Advisors, artistic directors at regional theatres. A small number of Playwright Fellows, including a Writer in Residence, are invited to participate in each round of the Workshop, which lasts six months. The more experienced Writer in Residence develops material along with the other writers, while also providing dramaturgical support. This program supports a community of self-guided professionals who desire creative connection, peer relationships and mentorship opportunities, at no cost to them.

At Workshop sessions playwrights share pages or scenes from works-in-progress which are read by professional actors. They then may, at their choice, invite their colleagues and Lark Playwright Advisors to comment on the work. The Playwrights’ Workshop focuses on unfinished work, free of commercial constraints.

Recent fellows from the Workshop have gone on to receive awards and productions following their time at the Lark. Some recent successes have been: Rajiv Joseph received a prestigous Time Warner commission from Second Stage Theatre, Sarah Ruhl received the Helen Merrill Award, Susan Blacksmith Award, and the Whiting Writers’ Award from the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation. Theresa Rebeck’s new play, ON THE WATER’S EDGE, written and developed in the workshop, was produced at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2004; as well Rebeck's MAURITIUS was produced on Broadway by Manhattan Theatre Club in 2007; Saviana Stanescu’s WAXING WEST, Andrea Thome’s UNDONE and Rob Ackerman’s THE LAST WORD, all received BareBones Productions for further development at the Lark.
