PEN America’s Writing for Justice Fellowship

Deadline: May 15th

Commissions writers—emerging or established—to create written works of lasting merit that illuminate critical issues related to mass incarceration and catalyze public debate. The Fellowship aims to harness the power of writers and writing in bearing witness to the societal consequences of mass incarceration by capturing and sharing the stories of incarcerated individuals, their families, communities, and the wider impact of the criminal justice system. MORE INFO

Florida Theatrical Association 2019 New Musical Discovery Series

Deadline: May 20th

Aspiring writers from around the country are encouraged to submit their new works, which will be reviewed by a panel of theater professionals. The panel will select one work that will receive a staged reading, and one final winner will receive a workshop presented of their piece. The Discovery Series will also include talkbacks for students and audiences with the playwrights and directors. MORE INFO

Bechdel Group Fall 2019 Workshop Series

Deadline: May 31st

The Bechdel Group accepts new plays and screenplays, scripts in development, partial scripts, drafts—anything in progress. Readings are designed to provide an opportunity to further script development, so work that is not yet "complete" is excites them. Readings typically feature 20-35 pages (roughly a half hour) of a script. Their aim is provide an informal, festive, safe space to hear your work and get feedback from actors, directors, dramaturgs, and theater lovers. MORE INFO

The Relentless Award

Deadline: June 15th

The Relentless Award, established in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman and his pursuit of truth in the theater, is an annual cash prize of $45,000, awarded to a playwright in recognition of a new play. The Award seeks plays that are challenging, exhibit fearlessness, are not mainstream, exude passion, and are relentlessly truthful. The American Playwriting Foundation encourages submissions by first-time playwrights, playwrights of color, and playwrights of all gender identifications. MORE INFO

The Civilians' R&D Group 

Deadline: June 17th

The Civilians' R&D Group provides writers, composers, directors, and/or performance makers in NYC with a space to develop investigative theater projects. The group meets 12 times over 9 months, during which time each artist or team of artists shares the progress of their project. The creative process may include interviewing, community engagement, research, or other experimental methods of inquiry. Teams are given a very short rehearsal process to address development goals at the end of the season, culminating in public presentations of the works-in-progress. Email

Green Stories

Green Stories is looking for Stage Plays that in some way touch upon ideas around building a sustainable society. Prizes of £50-£750 will be awarded, and Live Your Values production company will read all top-rated scripts with a view to putting on a production in 2020 with a community based theater group. MORE INFO
