The Civilians' R&D Group

Deadline: June 15, 2016

Are you a writer, composer, director, or performance maker with an investigative theater project you'd like to explore?  Are you looking to join a community of artists or searching for a space to develop your work? The Civilians' R&D Group meets biweekly for nine months, during which time each artist or team of artists develops a new piece of investigative theater. The creative process may include interviewing, community engagement, research, or other experimental methods of inquiry. The process will culminate in a public presentation of the works-in-development.

Deadline: Rolling

The SubletSeries@HERE Program supports 250 guest independent artists and groups and their audiences each season. This creative, curated rental program has allowed many upstart companies and emerging artists to realize their full artistic vision on a small budget. The program provides subsidized performance and rehearsal space, technical assistance, and administrative support, including a fully staffed box office. SubletSeries@HERE artists can also access equipment that is not typically available in venues our size such as video projectors, wireless microphones, and color scrollers, all for free or at subsidized rates. We accept applications from artists all over the world for the opportunity to show work.

MPAACT (The Ma'at Production Association of Afrikan Centered Theare) consistently produces a season of outstanding world premiere productions. With a vision focused on creating new work and collaborative art, MPAACT produces and educates with the goal of increasing understanding and appreciation of the realities of Black life. MPAACT is seeking submissions of full-length original plays by African American and African Diaspora playwrights for its 2017-2018 season. Selected playwrights will be given development opportunities over the next year to prepare work for world premiere productions with our Chicago company. Female identified playwrights strongly encouraged to submit.

IATI (International Theater Arts Institute*)

IATI is a New York-based, non-profit performing arts organization established in 1968, dedicated to serve all audiences in Spanish and English languages. Our vision is to bring art into the lives of those in poverty, ethnic and cultural isolation.In its 16th season, IATI’s Play Reading Series spotlights a curation of national and cross-continental contemporary writers.  From February to June 2016, Cimientos 2016 hosts 10 play readings that fuel the genesis of theater: the playwright.  “All plays are not created equal” and our avant-garde is a solemn cry into what theater can and should do today. Play readings will include a talkback with the playwright, director, actors and guests to focuses on audience reaction and constructive feedback to bring the new work closer to a fully-realized production. Submissions open June 1, 2016.

Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Play Contest

The Castillo Theatre sponsors the Mario Fratti-Fred Newman Political Play Contest and reading series bi-annually. The contest is intended to encourage the writing of progressive plays that engage the political/social/cultural questions affecting the world today and/or historical events and issues that impact on our communities. The contest encourages scripts that experiment with form and seek new ways of seeing and new ways of experiencing theatrical performance.  Castillo welcomes scripts from all countries and cultures.
