A Closer Look: Donja R. Love & Saheem Ali

Playwrights’ Corner

From March 2-11, 2018, The Lark will stage a BareBones® Workshop Production of Donja R. Love's new play In the Middle, the third and final play in a trilogy exploring Queerness during pivotal moments in Black History, directed by Saheem Ali.

Before working on this trilogy, surrealism really scared me...But I just started to lean into it."

The play follows Mary, woman with a cracked past, who sits in her flooded basement, weeping, after her son is killed by police. Her mother, sister, and daughter try to uplift and help her wade through the water, as she mourns. But when her tears begin to overflow, deep family secrets rise all around them.

One of the things I love about the piece is this community of people...some people have to put their own grief aside, and take care of someone else."

In order to give audiences a closer look at the play, Donja and Saheem sat down to interview one another about the process of building this production together. Check out the videos above to hear their conversation, then reserve your FREE seat to come see In the Middle at The Lark!
