{my lingerie play}: the videos

Stages of Resistance
Diana Oh sits in the center of a cluttered room holding a paper bag that reads "We all have a revolution within us. #mylingerieplay"

This piece is part of a blog salon, curated by Caridad Svich, called Stages of Resistance. The series welcomes reflections on themes related to making work for live performance in political and aesthetic resistance to forms and systems that oppress human rights and censor or severely limit freedom of expression. We are in increasingly hostile, volatile times around the world, and this salon hopes to serve as a space for considered, thoughtful, polemical articulations of practice and theory on the subject of resistance, the multiple meanings of political art, and the ways in which progressive, wholistic cultural change may be instigated through artworks.

"I want to create the kind of art that makes people sweat from their soul.

I want to create art that makes the impossible feel possible in the room. We have to let the impossible feel possible for the artists involved and the audience watching it. I want to hear that we can. I want to FEEL that we can.

I want to create art that makes people feel ZERO shame about the sex they're having and how they're having it and who they're having it with (unless they're hurting people, in which case, fuck that.)"

-From Diana Oh's "My Core Truths of Art in 2017"

These videos are excerpts from recent performances of Diana Oh's {my lingerie play} 2017.

The full title of which is {my lingerie play} 2017: ten underground performance installations in lingerie staged in an effort to provide a saner, safer, more courageous world for women, trans, queer, and non-binary humans to live in.

These brand new installations have taken place this year in New York City, New Orleans, Washington D.C., and Virginia, supported by The Venturous Theatre
Fund of the Tides Foundation.

The responses?

"I have hugged so many strangers because of {my lingerie play}," Diana told The Lark. "Some people who have come to see the installations and the show cry, and not because they are sad, but because they are relieved that someone is finally saying something."

The ninth and final installation, {my lingerie play} 2017: Installation #9: THE CONCERT AND CALL TO ARMS!!!!!!!!! will premiere at Rattlestick Theatre as a genre-smashing concert event in September 2017 in production with Rosalind Productions Theatre Company and co-directed by Stephanie Ryan Johnstone and Diana Oh, with music by Diana Oh featuring Diana Oh, Matt Park, Ryan McCurdy, and Rocky Vega as a band!

We'll see you there.
