Romania/United States Playwright Exchange
COVID-19 Update: Due to restrictions brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, this program will be on hiatus until further notice.
This program gathers artists of several generations and three cultures (Hungarian, Romanian, and American) to learn through shared experience about models for making theater in differing cultural contexts. The Lark brings Romanian writers (writing in Romanian and Hungarian) to the U.S. and American writers to Romania to work on translations of their work. In addition, The Lark organizes group sessions for writers to generate and share new work.
This exchange seeks to build upon a decade of bringing artists from the U.S. and former Eastern bloc countries together to explore common ground, share perspectives, and open the door to voices that are new or unheard in our divided cultures.
For the Romanian-based program, The Lark’s staff provides American plays for review by our Romanian partners. Translators are members of the graduate playwriting student body at the Arts University of Targu Mures in Transylvania, Romania.
The Selection Process
For the U.S. based program, Romanian and Hungarian alumni of the graduate playwriting program in Targu Mures are invited to submit plays for consideration by their faculty. Playwrights, translating playwrights, and plays are chosen by Lark staff.
