Lick 'O the Knife

by Jackie Roberts

Liaison: Kent Gash

Lick O’ the Knife is a Black swashbuckler that revolves around the relationship between Alexandre Pushkin and Alexander Dumas (Père). Set in 1837 Paris, the piece takes place over a wild 12 hours of drinking, eating, “poeming” and love-making ending in a disastrous duel. Pushkin is widely regarded as the greatest poet of Russia; and Dumas may be the most popular French author in its history. However, it is rarely acknowledged in popular culture that these nineteenth century writers considered themselves black.
