Sugar In Our Wounds

by Donja Love

Liaison: Malika Oyetimein

On a plantation somewhere down South, there stands a tall, tall tree that’s rooted in magic. It grows a bond with a precocious slave named James – whom it’s destined to protect. But, on the eve of the Emancipation Proclamation, a mysterious runaway slave comes and challenges survival on the plantation – forcing James to discover he has more than just freedom to fight for, as he asks: How do you navigate who you are in a world that says you shouldn’t exist? Sugar In Our Wounds examines the intersection of Sexuality and Legacy, during one of America’s darkest times.
